A Matter of Temperance Tour Stop ~ A Silhouette of Temperance ~ and Giveaway

I have to say I am so excited to be a part of this tour! I am a HUGE fan of Mr. Temperance! I know I've had him as a guest here at the blog before, but I'm always excited to get to have him join us again! So today he will be revealing the secret to the lovely cover image of Miss Plumtartt and  himself. So without further ado the wonderful Mr. Ichabod Temperance!

A Silhouette of Temperance.

The silhouettes that appear on the cover of this book, 'A Matter of Temperance', should not exist.
Those images should have been rotted by the gastric juices of an ocean-dwelling leviathan.

My name is Ichabod Temperance. Once upon a time, I was helping a beautiful damsel in distress. Her name is Miss Persephone Plumtartt, She is the smartest, most lovely girl there ever could be. She has been beset by terrible monsters and I am the only one that can help her. Somewhere along the way in our book, 'A Matter of Temperance', the ship we sail upon gets into a terrible fix. I don't want to give any spoilers, so suffice it to say that monsters are involved. Before the tragic events which take the eight-wheeled ocean paddler from us, I have the good fortune of meeting a wonderful fellow passenger. A big, good looking gentleman named Wolfgang Metzger. For such a large, energetic, robust, and bursting with vitality he-man, Wolfgang possesses a delicate and artistic talent. First, Wolfie produces a leaf of thick, black, paper, and then with a gleeful glint in his Bavarian eye, {and a waggle of his dark brows,} he draws a velvet bag from an inside pocket. From this, a pair of small, but extremely sharp scissors are displayed. Closing one eye, and using his thumb as an aiming and scale reference, he gives both of us a very close scrutiny. He may have taken two or three scrutinies of Miss Plumtartt. She is, I will readily admit, pretty easy on the peepers. Getting back to his business, and in a whirlwind of scissory activity, Wolfie cut out two delightful silhouettes!

I have always loved silhouettes. Isn't it uncanny how they can convey so much information in such a limited medium? My mom had one done of me when I had just turned five. She has had it on her bedroom wall ever since. She says that silhouette looks more like me than any photo ever since. I agree with her. That particular silhouette of me was done photographically. Being five years old is pretty far away for me now, so I am vague on the particulars of how it was done. It was an unusual process, though, involving sitting perpendicular to the flash. The camera was behind a white curtain, I think. My mom still has a small silhouette of herself when she was nine years old. I can see her as nine when I look at it. Hers was done as a cut-out, as Mr. Metzger does his. My mom grew up in St. Petersburg Florida. Her silhouette story is that when leaving church, a woman approached her mother and her two sisters. She would, for a small price, cut out a silhouette of the three girls. The country was in an economic depression and money was tight, but my grandmother paid for the cut outs. My mom is now eighty-seven, and that silhouette is on her mantelpiece. I am sure that she cherishes it.

Miraculously, the same silhouettes that Mr. Metzger did while aboard the 'late' Sol Furnace driven super-steamer, the S.S. Victoria, survived the disaster. Miss Plumtartt had them safely secured in her bustle! Those silhouettes are now in use on the cover of 'A Matter of Temperance'! Since then, Mr. Metzger has not only done silhouettes for all six of my books, but has been a reoccurring character in some of them as well!

Cheers and Happy Reading!
Your pal,
~Icky

A Matter of Temperance
 by
Ichabod Temperance

In 1869, the Earth experiences the close pass of a new comet. In its wake, thousands of Terra's inhabitants find themselves strangely changed. Among humanity, many find that any talent they may naturally possess has been elevated to an astounding degree. Likewise, a number of animals become self-aware and intelligent. A young “comet prodigy” from humble beginnings, Ichabod Temperance, has become one of the world's foremost inventors in this age of prolific genius. Traveling to England to deliver his latest brilliant device to a famous explorer, the young tinker is unexpectedly struck by the fearsome hand of fate. Meanwhile, a lovely young aristocrat, Miss Persephone Plumtartt, survives an experimental accident only to find herself imbued with a power she can neither understand nor control, while dark forces and malevolent creatures pursue her, leaving a gruesome wake of death.
Yet, worse is to come. The naïve young inventor and the lovely intellectual find themselves fighting not only to save their own lives, while concurrently coming to terms with their own budding romance, but to prevent the destruction of all life on Earth in this humorously told and poignant steampunk adventure!

This is the first book in the series, 'The Adventures of Ichabod Temperance'. There are six books. Though in a series, each book is a stand-alone adventure.

About the author
